What you need.

A recent computer and a microphone. A graphics card makes Typd faster, but it is not needed.

Graphics
Not needed. Typd picks its model for your computer.At its first start Typd downloads the full 1.7B model (1.6 GB) for an NVIDIA card that has 3.5 GB of memory or more, or an Apple silicon Mac with 16 GB or more; it uses about 2 GB of graphics memory. Every other computer gets the light model (0.6B, 611 MB). On Windows, a PC with such an NVIDIA card also downloads NVIDIA’s GPU libraries (337 MB) after the model; until they arrive, and on every other PC, Typd runs on the processor. Change the model in Settings › Model.

02First runOnce

The first time.

Typd is not signed with a paid Microsoft or Apple certificate yet, so your computer asks you to confirm the first time you open it. You only do this once.

Windows

  1. Open Typd-Setup-0.2.11.exe from your Downloads.
  2. If a blue window says “Windows protected your PC”, click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. If a window says “Open File – Security Warning” (Unknown Publisher), click Run.
  4. Typd installs and starts. It lives in the tray at the bottom right of the screen, maybe under the ^ arrow. A short walkthrough shows you the rest.
  5. Click into any text box, tap Right Alt and talk. Tap it again, and the finished text appears.

Mac

  1. Open the .dmg and drag Typd onto Applications.
  2. Open Typd. When macOS blocks it, click Done, then go to System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway. On macOS 13 or 14 you can instead right-click Typd, choose Open, then Open again.
  3. Turn on Microphone, Accessibility and Input Monitoring for Typd in Privacy & Security. After Input Monitoring, quit Typd and open it again: macOS applies that one only at start.
  4. Click into any text box, press Right ⌘ and talk. Press it again, and the finished text appears.

If macOS says Typd “is damaged”, open Terminal, paste this line and press Return. It only removes the “downloaded from the internet” mark from Typd.xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Typd.app

On its first start Typd downloads its speech model (611 MB, or 1.6 GB for the full model), then you can dictate; the tray and the walkthrough show how far it is, and on a metered connection Typd asks first. After that Typd works offline, stays ready in the background, and keeps itself up to date.

03Privacy and licenceNo account

It runs on your computer.

Typd turns your voice into text on your own computer, with no account and no internet needed to dictate. To improve the model, Typd asks on first launch whether to share your dictations; nothing is shared unless you say yes. Read the privacy page.

Sharing
Typd asks on first launch.Choose Share and each dictation’s audio and text go to the developer to train the model; choose Don’t share and nothing is sent. Nothing is chosen for you, and Share dictations in Settings changes it at any time. Under 18? Ask a parent before you share.
