Typd privacyLast updated October 2026

Dictation runson your computer.

Typd turns your voice into text on your own computer. Dictating needs no internet connection, and there is no account. To make Typd better, Typd asks on first launch whether to share your dictations to train its model. They are shared only if you say yes.

What stays on your computer

  • Turning your voice into text. Typd listens only after you press its key, and stops when you press it again. The recording is turned into text on your computer; nothing has to be sent for that.
  • Your history of dictations (kept for 30 days unless you change that in Settings).
  • What is on your screen. To spell names right, Typd reads the text around your cursor while you dictate. That never leaves your computer.
  • Your dictionary and settings.

Typd works without an internet connection. With sharing off, dictating sends nothing over the internet.

Sharing: Typd asks on first launch

Typd can share your dictations so its model can be tested and trained on real speech. Typd asks on first launch, “Help make Typd better?”, with Share and Don’t share; nothing is chosen for you, and until you answer nothing is shared. Share dictations in Settings changes your answer at any time. If you turned sharing off in an earlier version of Typd, it stays off. Earlier versions shared by default: if yours did and you had not already agreed to share, Typd asks you once after it updates, and if you choose Don’t share it deletes what was shared.

A dictation is sent after its text has been typed (or copied, when Typd could not type it), in the background, never while you are dictating it. Typd shares at most 50 dictations, or 20 MB of audio, a day. While sharing is on, Typd sends for each dictation:

  • the recording of what you said, and the text Typd typed (when you ask Typd to change selected text, only the recording of your instruction, not the text);
  • whether it was a dictation or a change to selected text, and how many characters Typd typed;
  • which app you were typing into, by its program name (for example “Discord”);
  • which model wrote it and its version, and whether Typd’s add-on for changing text was used;
  • when you dictated, how long the recording was, and how long Typd took to write it;
  • your operating system, its version and your processor type, and the versions of Typd and of Electron, the framework it is built on;
  • a note, if you mark a dictation with “That was wrong” (and, for one already sent, the versions Typd was running when you marked it).

It is sent with a random install ID that the server makes the first time Typd shares. It is not linked to your name, your email or an account. To limit how many new installs one network can add in a day, the server counts them under a scrambled form of the IP address, never the address itself, and forgets that count after two days.

Typd never shares:

  • what is on your screen, or the text around your cursor;
  • text you had selected, or window titles;
  • anything when you are not dictating.

One dictation only. If sharing is off and you mark a dictation with “That was wrong”, Typd asks whether to send that one dictation so it can be fixed. Only a yes sends it.

What happens to what you share

I use it to test new versions of Typd’s model and, if the quality is good, to train the model on it. It is stored privately on Cloudflare’s servers, never published, and never sold or given to anyone. Only I, and the AI tools on my own computer, work with it.

While sharing is on, avoid dictating passwords, bank details or anything else you would not want stored.

Stopping and deleting

  • Stop sharing with Share dictations in Typd’s Settings, at any time. Nothing more is sent, and dictations still waiting to be sent are deleted.
  • Delete what you shared with “Delete what I’ve shared” in Settings. It deletes everything stored for your install on the server, and turns sharing off.
  • Or write to contact@mehmetdedeler.com, and I will delete it for you.
  • Uninstalling Typd removes the app. Your history stays in Typd’s settings folder on your computer until you delete it.

If you are under 18

Recordings of your voice are personal information. Typd asks before it shares anything: if you are under 18, please ask a parent or guardian before you choose Share, and choose Don’t share (or turn sharing off in Settings) if they say no. Using Typd with sharing off needs nobody’s permission, because then dictating sends nothing.

Update checks

Update checks send the app and model version with an anonymous install ID, so the developer can count versions in use. The ID is a random number Typd makes on your computer, separate from the sharing ID, and nothing else about you or your dictations goes with it. The server keeps daily counts per version. It never stores the ID or your IP address; to count each install once a day, it keeps a scrambled form of the ID for that day only.

Downloading Typd

Downloads come from my server, which runs on Cloudflare. To keep free downloads running, it counts downloads per day, and it holds your IP address in memory for a short while to stop one connection from downloading over and over. It does not store a list of who downloaded Typd. Cloudflare handles your connection under its own privacy policy.

Check it yourself

Typd’s app is open source under the GPL-3.0, so anyone can read what it sends and when: github.com/SameRainbows/typd-app.

Who is responsible

Typd is made by one person, Mehmet Dedeler. Questions, or a request to see or delete what you shared: contact@mehmetdedeler.com.

If this page changes in a way that affects what is shared, Typd will ask you before it shares anything new.
